What We Do

Fall Picnic
When fall quarter begins in mid-September, all the faculty, incoming freshman and continuing physics students meet at a nearby park to eat great BBQ, play fun outdoor sports and network.  It’s a great chance to get to know the faculty and staff in a relaxed environment.  Plus make new friends who will travel with you throughout your years at Cal Poly and beyond!

Friday Sports
Let’s play!! At the end of every week, rain or shine, Friday Sports are a time to run around with some crazy physics students and professors!  Battle it out against your teachers! Seek revenge on their grading practices and exams!  It’s tons of fun and good for you, plus quite cathartic.

Garlic Off
What’s that I smell??  Ooh! Garlic!  Every fall quarter, faculty and students meet to test their delicious garlicky creations and battle for awesome prizes.  We compete for the categories: Most Garlicky and/or Most Delicious!  And if you don’t like garlic, make something else entirely! All entries are welcome!

Burn Off
Ouch!  That burns!  During winter quarter, turn up the heat with the Burn Off!  More competition arises when faculty and students test their sizzling skills by creating fiery hot dishes such as Habanero Ice Cream or SpicySpicy Salsa!  Win prizes for Hottest and/or Most Delicious!

Bake Off
You guessed it!  Another crazy cooking event!  Gather together with your yummy baked items and compete for prizes in the spring.  Cookies, brownies, croissants!  Or baked potatoes, lasagna and casseroles!  Anything baked will do!

Downtown Brew Night
For all ages!
On the fifth week of each quarter (affectionately known as Hump Week – as it’s halfway through) physics faculty, staff and students of all ages meet for dinner and billiards at a downtown restaurant.  Students under 21 are welcome!

Spring Banquet
At the end of every school year, physics students, staff and faculty meet at the Dairy Creek Golf Course to celebrate the graduating seniors and present the Professor of the Year award.  The night consists of a free raffle with great prizes from around town as well as a delicious, catered dinner.

H-bar and Grill
The greatest asset of the department is the physics lounge.  Come in any time to sit on the couches, use the computers and printer, do problems on the whiteboards or simply chat with fellow students.

Pizza Advising
Signing up for the right classes can be tough, so physics faculty will help!  Students of all years are encouraged to show up for the info night, and are even rewarded with free dinner!
